Boys basketball: Tigers beat Millers in all-county game

By RICHIE HALL
Fishers got off to a fast start in an all-county and Hoosier Crossroads Conference game at The Mill on Tuesday, and went on to beat host Noblesville 52-41.
The Tigers scored the first 11 points of the game, with Jeffrey Simmons contributing eight of those points. Lucas Prewitt also made a 3-point basket.
A 3 from E.J. Smith got the Millers on the board and Luke Almodovar added a layin. But Fishers embarked on another run after that, scoring 12 points in a stretch that
continued into the second quarter and gave the Tigers a 23-5 lead. Prewitt began the run with another 3, and Charlie Smith scored six points. Fishers would go to lead 25-10 at halftime.
“We’re missing two starters, so we needed to get off to a good start and build some momentum and show these guys who are starting for the first time that they can play out here,” said Tigers coach Garrett Winegar. The coach said his team was “locked in” defensively and he was proud of his players for that.
The second half was played more evenly, but Fishers was able to hold a comfortable lead throughout. Charlie Smith added five more points in the third quarter, while Sean Millsaps also scored five, including a three-point play. Noah Harris had a solid third period for Noblesville, with six points.
The Tigers pushed their lead up to 20 points on three occasions during the fourth quarter. Myles Stringer made a layin to get Fishers ahead 46-26. Fishers was aware of the
comeback that the Millers made against Pike last week.
“That was a point we made at halftime,” said Winegar. “We had a 15-point lead at half and we said ‘Hey, we just watched the film. They’re not going to quit. They were
in the same situation versus Pike, they came back and beat them, so we got to go out here like it’s 0-0 and we got to try to stretch this lead a little bit.”
Charlie Smith finished the game with 18 points, five rebounds, four steals and four assists. Simmons had 14 points, while Prewitt scored eight points and collected five rebounds. Millsaps added seven points while Stringer had five.
E.J. Smith led Noblesvile with 16 points, with Harris adding 12 points and four rebounds. Almodovar scored eight points and Josh Durham had five.
“This is a good group, they’re talented,” said Millers coach John Peckinpaugh. We’ll hopefully have some better shooting nights than we did tonight. But we’ll get back to work Wednesday and start getting ready for Zionsville on Wednesday at practice.”
The Tigers are 6-4 and next play at Columbus North on Saturday. Noblesville is 5-4 and hosts Zionsville on Friday in an HCC girls-boys doubleheader.
