FISHERS – A superb performance by the Hamilton Southeastern middle-to-heavyweights gave the Royals a Mudsock Trophy on Tuesday.
Southeastern beat rival Fishers 46-16 in the annual Mudsock dual meet, which took place at the Tiger Den. Fishers won the first match of the meet, but Southeastern took over after that by taking the next eight matches, five of them by pins.
“That’s probably the best we’ve wrestled all season, top to bottom” said Royals coach Nick Brobst. “Everybody was in the right weight classes, everybody was healthy. We went right after them, we got a lot of good wins by early, and we won by fall.”
The meet started at 145 pounds, which saw the Tigers’ Tyler Lindamood win in a tough 2-1 decision. But the tide turned immediately for HSE, when Trevon Ternoir came from behind to get an 11-7 decision win at 152 pounds.
That opened the floodgates for the Royals. Zack Wagner pushed Southeastern ahead 6-3 with a decision win at 160 pounds. The Royals then got three consecutive wins by fall from Ryan Cast at 170), Jacob Schneider at 182 and Max Broom at 195. Schneider’s victory was by far the quickest pin of the night, getting the call in 20 seconds.
Devin Dudley kept Southeastern rolling with a decision win at 220, then the Royals picked up two more pins, from Dom Burgett at 285 and Mat Benson at 106; those wins effectively clinched the meet for Southeastern.
The Royals picked up two more victories, with Nick Egorov getting a major decision win at 126 and Zach Lang taking the 138-pound bout by decision. In all, HSE won 10 of the 14 matches.
Fishers totaled four wins, starting with Lindamood at 145. Tye Linser won at 113 by decision, then Griffin Ingalls took the 120-pound match by major decision. Zachary Streuder was victorious in a dramatic 132-pound match, with a pin at the absolute last second (5:59).
“I think we fought hard,” said Tigers coach Frank Ingalls. “We had a lot of guys just returning back from being quarantined and barely have enough practices, four practices in. So, I think shape was an issue for that. But no excuses. HSE wrestled well tonight and did what they had to do.”
Both teams will be back in action Saturday at the Hoosier Crossroads Conference meet, which takes place at Brownsburg.
