The Sheridan boys basketball team finally got its season underway on Tuesday, winning its opener at North Montgomery 39-33.
The Chargers led 5-4 after the first quarter and led 19-18 at halftime. Ethan Moistner helped keep the Blackhawks within shouting distance by scoring five points in the second quarter, including a 3-pointer.
North Montgomery then led 28-26 after three periods, but the Sheridan defense took over in the fourth, holding the Chargers to only five points. The ‘Hawks scored 13 points, with Silas DeVaney getting five.
“Kids playing hard and playing good solid defense a lot of the time got us over the hump and we hit some big free throws at the end,” said Sheridan coach Tod Windlan, in his first game with the Blackhawks.
Moistner finished the game with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Corbin Murray led the rebounds with nine. Kyle Eden had a solid all-around game with nine points, four rebounds and four steals.
Winland said the vision for his team is to “get better each game. Obviously get our legs underneath us, we’ve been off for three weeks. And then just continue to chip away and get better.”
Sheridan will get right back at it this morning as the Blackhawks will play in the Alexandria Tiger Classic. Sheridan takes on Greenfield-Central at 10 a.m., followed by Southern Wells playing Alexandria at noon. The consolation game is set for 6 p.m. and the championship game starts at 8 p.m.
