Girls basketball: Huskies return to action with victory

It’s been almost a month since the Hamilton Heights girls basketball team has been able to play a game due to COVID restrictions.
The Huskies finally got back on the court Saturday, hosting Northwestern. Heights broke a halftime tie with a great defensive effort, leading to a 39-27 win over the Tigers in the Huskies’ first Hoosier Conference East Division game of the season.
The two teams were tied at 7-7 in the first quarter and 16-16 at halftime. Jillian Osswald had six points in the first half and MyKayla Moran scored four. The Huskies took control in the third quarter, holding a 27-21 advantage by the end of the period. Moran scored another five points.
Heights put the game away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Northwestern 12-6. Oswald scored six points in that period, giving her a team-high 15 points for the game. Moran finished with 11 points, while Camryn Runner added seven and Ella Hickok scored six.
The Huskies are 4-0 for the season. They are next scheduled to play Dec. 28 at the Perry Meridian Tournament.

‘Blazers drop first game of the season

The Class 2A No. 3 University girls suffered their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon, falling 69-58 at Sectional 43 host Cascade.
Sierra Hinds had 19 points for University while Payton Seay had 15 points and nine rebounds and Kelsey DuBois had another double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The host Cadets exploded for 45 second-half points, including 26 in the decisive third quarter. University led 25-24 at the half, but Cascade jumped out to a 39-29 lead with 4:34 left in the quarter. The Blazers battled back behind 10 points from Hinds and a pair of Seay free throws to pull within 43-41 with 2:09 left in the quarter, however Cascade scored the last seven points of the quarter to lead 50-41 at the break.
The Cadets scored the first six points on the fourth quarter to take a 15-point lead with five minutes left. University used a pair of Jordan Patterson three-pointers to battle back with 60-52 with 2:45 remaining, but could get no closer. Patterson finished with 10 points.
University shot just 30 percent from the field, but were 93 percent from the foul line, including an 11-for-11 performance by Seay.
The Trailblazers are next in action at the Tipton Lady Blue Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29. University plays Tri-Central in the opening round.

GC falls to Ritter

Guerin Catholic fell to Cardinal Ritter 51-43 in a Saturday afternoon game at the Eagles Nest.
The two teams were tied at 9-9 after the first quarter, but the Raiders took control in the second period, leading 24-18 at halftime. Olivia Labus scored seven points for the Golden Eagles in the first half, with Delaney Klee adding six points.
Guerin cut into Ritter’s lead slightly in the third quarter, getting within 32-27 by the end of the period. The Raiders scored 19 points in the fourth to keep ahead of the Golden Eagles.
Labus and Natalie Fernandez both scored 12 points for GC; Fernandez had two 3-pointers in the second half. Klee scored seven points.
Guerin Catholic is 4-5 and will be off until Jan. 4 when it hosts Lebanon.

Greyhounds beat Portage

Carmel beat Portage 52-38 Saturday afternoon in an away game for the Class 4A No. 4 Greyhounds.
Stats from the game were not available. Carmel is 7-3 and next plays on Dec. 29 when it hosts Lawrence Central for a Metropolitan Conference game.
