Camden Brown scored a career-high 31 points and had 11 rebounds as the Class 2A No. 13 University boys rolled to a 64-45 win at Pendleton Heights.
Larry Pierce also had a double-double for the Trailblazers with 16 points and 10 rebounds as University won for the fourth time in six games this season.
Brown scored the first six points of the game as University never trailed in the game. The 6-6 senior was 10 for 12 from the field and 11 for 12 at the foul line on the night. “Brown was fantastic and as efficient as you can hope for from the field and the line,” said University coach Brandon Lafferman. “I can’t remember a 30-point performance for a Blazer team the past four to five years. His hard work in the off season really showed tonight.”
“This was an outstanding road win for our program tonight,” Lafferman continued. “Our team defensive effort was really solid tonight and we got great minutes from our bench. We are excited to step back out on the floor at home tomorrow night and try to keep our first winning streak of the season going.”
After Brown put University in front 8-3, Mitchell Martin added a free throw and Pierce hit a pair of three pointers, including a buzzer-beater to give the Trailblazers a 15-6 lead after one.
Brown had eight of University’s first 10 points in the second quarter to help build the lead to 26-10. Matt Jones hit a three pointer and Pierce added a rebound basket and another bucket in the dying seconds of the quarter to propel University to a 33-16 halftime lead.
The Arabians made a run in the third quarter behind the hot shooting of Zion Cook, who scored 15 points in the period, including a four-point play. Pendleton Heights could get no closer than 11 as Brown kept coming up with clutch points, scoring 10 more points in the third and University led 46-33 after three periods.
University scored 10 of the first 12 points of the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Brown had the first basket before Pierce hit a three-point basket and came back with four straight free throws. Kasey Ash-Simpson made two foul shots for a 56-37 lead midway through the quarter.
Martin and Ash-Simpson each finished with 7 points. Jamison Dunham led the Arabians with 18 points while Cook had 15, all in the third quarter.
The Trailblazers took care of the basketball, committing just six turnovers and allowed no points off the miscues. University scored nine points off nine Pendleton Heights turnovers.
University will attempt to win their third game in a row Saturday night when they host Traders Point Christian Academy at The U Center. The Knights will enter the game with a 1-3 record after a double overtime loss to Eminence on Friday night.
