‘Blazers dominate Speedway

The Class 2A No. 7-ranked University boys basketball team picked up its second win of the season with a dominating 61-39 win over Speedway at The U Center.
Senior Camden Brown led the way for the Trailblazers with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Larry Pierce had 10 points and nine rebounds for 2-1 University.
Coach Brandon Lafferman thought his team played their best ball of the young season. “Great bounce back win after a close loss last night,” he said. “This was our best team effort of the season as all five starters contributed and our bench players came in and provided an additional spark. I thought Kasey Ash-Simpson and Seth Hogg did some great things for us off the bench. Freshman Sabien Cain did a great job scoring and distributing the ball.”
The Blazers started slow with score knotted at 4-4 midway through the first quarter. Brown gave University the lead for good with 2:30 left in the period for a 6-4 lead. Brown scored six points in the quarter as University led 13-8.
University stretched their lead to 30-17 at halftime as Brown nearly had a double double in the first half with 11 points and nine rebounds. Matt Jones had a pair of first half three pointers.
The Trailblazers blew the game open in the third quarter, racing to a 46-26 lead after three. Cain had seven points in the third quarter with Brown adding four more.
Jones finished with nine points with Cain adding seven points and five rebounds. Mitchell Martin had six points while Ash-Simpson and Nate Jeffrey chipped in with four each. Zach Whitham had a three pointer while senior Adam Witzman had his first varsity basket.
University hosts Harrison on Tuesday night. “We are excited to jump right back out there Tuesday with a major challenge with a good 4A program in Harrison,” said Lafferman.
