‘Rocks win opener

Westfield opened its season on Friday with a 47-38 Hoosier Crossroads Conference victory at Zionsville.
The Shamrocks and the Eagles were tied at 7-7 after the first quarter, but Westfield pulled away in the second period, holding Zionsville to just five points. The ‘Rocks scored 16 in that quarter, giving them a 23-12 lead at halftime.
Westfield stayed in front in the second half, playing good defense throughout. The Eagles cut the Shamrocks’ lead to three in the fourth quarter, but Westfield made its free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Braden Smith scored 14 points to lead the Shamrocks scoring, and also handed out six assists. Nic Depasquale added 13 points and Cam Haffner led the Westfield rebounding with six.
The Shamrocks will play their first home game of the season tonight, hosting Kokomo at The Rock.
