‘Blazers roll past Shortridge in first game of season

University traveled to Shortridge on Tuesday to open its season, and the Trailblazers came home with a historic win.
The ‘Blazers won 68-25. The victory was a milestone for University coach Justin Blanding, as it marked his 100th career win. This is the sixth season for Blanding as coach of the Trailblazers.
University led 10-8 after the first quarter, but took over in the second period, outscoring Shortridge 20-3 for a 30-11 halftime lead. The Trailblazers then had another 20-point quarter in the third, then only allowed Shortridge three points in the fourth.
Three UHS players finished in double figures for scoring. Kelsey DuBois reached double-double status with 23 points and 19 rebounds, and also had five assists and three blocked shots. Peyton Seay added 16 points and made four steals, while Sierra Hinds scored 13 and had five steals.
Kamryn Washington, a sophomore transfer from Warren Central, had eight points and five steals in her first game as a ‘Blazer. Four of University’s five starters – Washington, Seay, Jordan Patterson and DuBois – are sophomores, while fifth starter Hinds is a senior. Juniors Anne Gibboney, Abby Hannon and Arrion Sherrod all return varsity experience to the team. Other players on the roster are junior Becky Williams, sophomore Reva Allam and freshmen Lily Hovda and Lindsey Blocksom.
