Sheridan dropped a Hoosier Heartland Conference game to unbeaten Eastern Friday at Bud Wright Stadium.
The Class 2A No. 9 Comets beat the Blackhawks 49-14. Sheridan led 7-0 after the first quarter; Keenan Warren caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Silas De-Vaney early in the period, with Cameron Hovey making the extra-point kick.
But that would be all for the ‘Hawks for some time. Meanwhile, Eastern scored two rushing touchdowns in the second period, then added another off a fumble recovery. That put the Comets up 21-7 at halftime.
“We made some mistakes and gave them three touchdowns real quick,” said Wright.
Hovey scored in the third quarter on a three-yard run, then kicked his second extra point of the game. But Eastern continued to roll, with two more touchdowns in the third. The Comets added another pair of TDs in the fourth quarter, including one from a 74-yard pass play.
Hovey finished the game with 194 yards rushing.
With the victory, Eastern clinched the HHC championship; the Comets are 6-0 in the conference and 8-0 overall. Sheridan is now 2-2 in the HCC and 4-3 overall. The ‘Hawks travel to Carroll next Friday.
