Olivia Norris, a Fishers High School student and elite javelin athlete, competed in three meets this season, two National Virtual meets and one traditional meet.
First, Norris competed in the NSAF xAthleticNET Virtual Nationals. She threw 134 feet, 7 inches, a 14-foot personal record from last year. Norris placed eighth overall and had the No. 1 ranking for 10th-grade athletes. She also received All-American honors for the fifth time in her career.
Norris then finished third in the NSAF xAthleticNET Summer Throws Festival, another national meet. Norris threw 131-2 in the 9th-12th grade division.
The “virtual meet” concept was created due to the COVID-19 pandemic and allowed athletes to compete against one another without being in large groups, and to practice social distancing. Athletes had their videos recorded from start to end with recording times and distances. Those videos would then be submitted to the event committee for validation.
Norris also competed in a traditional meet, the Speed Capital Midwest Invitational, which took place over the summer at Decatur Central High School. This meet featured athletes from several states. Norris finished first with a throw of 132 feet.
Norris received an invitation to the American Festival in Pennsylvania, an Elite javelin competition for 2021, where she will compete against the best in the country from high school to pro.
Norris holds a 3.9 grade-point average and plans to attend college to become an obstetrician.
