‘Hounds, ‘Hawks renew old rivalries

Week 2 of the high school football season will bring some familiar matchups, a new opponent for Noblesville, as well as the reboot of a couple old rivalries.
One of those rivalries that will be revisited on Friday is between two teams that haven’t played each other in 10 years. Carmel will welcome Cathedral on to their field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
The Greyhounds and the Irish haven’t played each other since they participated in a six-year series, which lasted from 2005 to 2010. The rivalry finished with a 3-3 record, and only of the six games was decided by more than a touchdown: Carmel won 24-14 in 2005.
Both schools are coming off Week 1 victories: The Greyhounds took care of Plainfield 31-6, while the Irish beat Westfield 56-20. Cathedral was led by its quarterback Nathan McCahill in its opening win. The senior completed 18 of 26 passes for 201 yards and threw for five touchdowns.
McCahill also rushed for 109 yards and two TDs. Senior Camden Jordan made three of those touchdown catches, totaling eight receptions for 120 yards.
Carmel’s quarterback also stepped up big for his team. Zach Osborne was responsible for all four of the Greyhounds’ touchdowns, making short rushes for three scores and sending a TD pass to Colton Parker. Osborne totaled 58 yards rushing and went 12-of-21 through the air for 109 yards. Parker made seven catches.
SHERIDAN-BENTON CENTRAL
Sheridan will also take on an opponent that it hasn’t played in 10 years. The Blackhawks host Benton Central Friday at Bud Wright Stadium, with kickoff at 7 p.m.
The ‘Hawks played Benton Central in the regular season from 2000 to 2010, back when Sheridan was a member of the Hoosier Conference. While the Bison won the first three games in the series, the Blackhawks dominated the next eight years, finishing with a 60-20 victory in 2010.
Benton Central dropped its opener to Delphi last week 24-0, the first game for new BC coach Tyler Marsh. Junior Colin Wilkinson is the Bison quarterback; he went 8-for-23 and totaled 38 yards, and also led the rushing with 13 yards. Sophomore Seth Plummer made three receptions.
The Bison had a decent defensive performance, with five players making 10 or more tackles. Senior Jacob Meredith led that category with 15 stops.
Sheridan is coming off a 21-20 victory over Western Boone, the two-time defending Class 2A state champions. It was the first win for the ‘Hawks over the Stars in 10 years. (Notice a pattern here?) Cameron Hovey dominated the game with three touchdowns and a total of 111 yards rushing. Sheridan only had one pass attempt in the contest, but it was a big one: Silas De-Vaney found Cale Cummins for a 34-yard touchdown.
Five different Blackhawks had at least 10 tackles in the game. Junior Gavin Reners made 18 stops, followed by sophomore Jacob Jones with 17. Junior Noah Ehrie had 16 tackles.
HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN-NORTH CENTRAL
Hamilton Southeastern will play its first home game of the season Friday, as the Royals host North Central in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Both Southeastern and the Panthers are coming off opening-week wins. The Royals had a fine defensive effort while beating Lawrence Central 24-0, while North Central was a winner over HSE’s district-mate, defeating Fishers 40-20.
The Panthers got a big game out of senior quarterback Zayd Vestal, who totaled 403 yards in passing against the Tigers. Vestal was 21-for-31 and had five touchdowns through the air. Seniors Theran Johnson and Thierno Diallo both caught two of those TD passes.
Senior David Smith was the top rusher, with 126 yards in 21 carries and a touchdown. Senior Thomas Bronaugh had 10 tackles, with senior Josiah Green making four tackles for a loss.
Southeastern had a balanced offensive effort in its first game. Senior John McCall completed 16 of 21 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown, while junior Blaine Wertz scored a TD while totaling 63 yards rushing. Junior Will Gerig collected four passes, including one for a score. Sophomore Cole Earlewine and senior Giovanni Ragland both made six tackles.
FISHERS-PIKE
Fishers will try to bounce back after its loss to North Central by hosting Pike for the Tigers’ Week 2 game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Red Devils are coming off a close win over Zionsville last week, by the score of 26-24. Quarterback Anthony Cialdella had an efficient night, going 10 for 18, totaling 219 yards and throwing for three touchdowns. Zavier Simpson had five of those catches, including one TD.
Isiah Martin was Pike’s leading rusher, with 113 yards to his credit. Modupe Esan led the Red Devils’ defense with 10 tackles.

WESTFIELD-HARRISON
Westfield will also be in rebound mode Friday, as it tries for its first win of the season when the Shamrocks host Harrison in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
The Raiders started their season by cruising past Terre Haute South 42-13 in a home game. Most of the scoring was done by senior Omarion Dixon, who totaled four touchdowns in 16 carries, gaining 146 yards on the ground.
Junior quarterback Tyler Knoy also rushed for a TD, totaling 121 yards. He completed 2 of 6 passes for 28 yards, with junior Max Bunger making both receptions. Junior Thomas Urban had eight tackles, including 3.5 for a loss.
The Shamrocks’ Maximus Webster threw two touchdown passes, finishing the game 7-of-14 for 99 yards. Nick Talley made 9 of 14 attempts for 115 yards and a TD pass. Mason Piening made five receptions and Micah Hauser led the rushing with 42 yards.
NOBLESVILLE-TERRE HAUTE SOUTH
In one of two away games for county teams, Noblesville will take a trip to Terre Haute South on Friday. Kickoff for this game is 7:30 p.m.
The Braves fell to Harrison 42-13 in their opener. Jacob Rutledge and Josh Cottee both scored touchdowns for Terre Haute South, and both totaled 40 yards rushing.
The Millers will also be looking for a first win, as they fell to a good Mount Vernon team 42-17 in their opener. Senior Holden Montarsi led the Noblesville rushing with 58 yards, while junior quarterback Connor Meinerding completed 3 of 8 passes for 29 yards.
Sophomore Chance Yeager had two of those catches, and also rushed for a touchdown. Senior Blaine McNabb led the Millers’ defense with six tackles.
HAMILTON HEIGHTS-NORTH MONTGOMERY

The Chargers have become an increasingly common opponent for the Huskies. Heights has played North four times in the last three seasons, twice in the regular campaign and twice in the sectional. The Chargers have won the last three times.
North Montgomery won its opener over North Putnam 22-8 last week. Junior Donavan Haworth threw for two touchdowns, completing 5 of 14 passes for 113 yards. Senior Logan Kelly caught four of those receptions, including one TD.
