The Guerin Catholic girls soccer team won its season-opening game with Zionsville on Wednesday, 2-0 at the Golden Eagles’ field.
It was a contest between two ranked teams in Class 3A: Zionsville is No. 16 and Guerin Catholic is No. 17. Neither team scored in the first half, but the Golden Eagles broke things open in the second half.
Senior Quincy McMahon, returning to the Guerin team after two years in Colorado, scored the first goal of the game with 30 minutes left. Twenty minutes later, junior Emerson Jennings added the second goal with McMahon making the assist.
The Golden Eagles play again Saturday, welcoming 3A No. 2 Carmel to their field.

Sheridan opened its season with a 5-1 loss at Cardinal Ritter on Wednesday.
The Blackhawks took an early lead when freshman Emma Alexander scored on a free kick from 22 yards. Sheridan held the lead until the end of the first half, when the Raiders added two goals to take a 2-1 halftime lead. Ritter then scored three more goals in the second half.
Sophomore Hailey Godby played goalkeeper for the first time and made 10 saves. Coach Brian Prange credited Godby with being “very active in the box for the Blackhawks.”
Sheridan will play at Hamilton Heights next Wednesday, Aug. 26.
