Soccer: Miller girls zoom past Irish to start season

The Noblesville girls soccer team opened its season Monday with a 3-0 win over Cathedral at the White River Elementary School field.
The Class 3A No. 1, defending state champion Millers got on top of the 2A No. 7 Irish early, with Meskerem James scoring a goal in the eighth minute. Noblesville added two more goals midway through the second half, with Ava Bramblett putting one in during the 58th minute, then Makenna Maloy scored two minutes later.
The Millers will play at West Lafayette on Saturday afternoon.

Westfield also started its season with any easy victory, beating Lawrence North 4-0 on Monday.
Madison Niehaus scored two goals for the Shamrocks, with fellow juniors Kate Eichenauer and Amiah Sprunger adding one goal each. Sydney Payne and Zoe McKinney both made two saves.

Carmel, ranked No. 2 in 3A, cruised to a 5-0 win over Pike Monday in the Greyhounds’ Metropolitan Conference opener.
Susie Soderstrom scored two goals for Carmel, with Ava Cabellon, Megan Hamm and Tamara Smith all scoring one. Soderstrom, Smith, Brooke Bailey and Riley Pennington all had one assist. Erin Baker made one save.
The Greyhounds next play Saturday at 3A No. 17 Guerin Catholic.

Hamilton Heights, ranked No. 17 in 2A, played to a 1-1 tie with 1A No. 10 Heritage Christian on Tuesday.
Emma Hall scored the Huskies’ goal. Jenn House had seven goalkeeper saves, with Paige Doucette making one save.

BOYS GAMES
In an all-county boys soccer game, Westfield upset 3A No. 5 Fishers 2-0 on Tuesday.
Ellis Douthit and David Green both scored one goal for the Shamrocks, with Declan Wheeler and Ben Wallace each making one assist. Bennett Paison made five saves as Westfield goalkeeper.

Noblesville, ranked No. 3 in 3A, took care of Greenfield-Central 4-0 in its season-opener on Tuesday.
Drew Barnes scored the first Millers goal three minutes into the game, with Spencer Holland providing the assist. Palmer Ault added the second goal, then Holland scored Noblesville’s third goal. Ault completed the scoring with a goal five minutes before halftime.
The Millers will host 3A No. 7 Carmel on Thursday in a game that will be broadcast on Hamilton County TV.

Hamilton Southeastern, ranked No. 10 in 3A, cruised to a 3-1 win over Lawrence North on Tuesday.
Isa Sayeed scored the Royals’ first goal off a through ball by Neel Wetzel. In the second half, Wetzel scored Southeastern’s second goal, then Haris Mizuta got the third goal, with Yusuf Awad making the assist.

Guerin Catholic beat Cardinal Ritter 8-0 on Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles play Heritage Christian next Tuesday, Aug. 25.
