For generations, summer camp is something kids have looked forward to all school year, however, the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed how camps are offered or in some cases, caused them to be canceled altogether. To keep families and campers safe while still offering the fun of summer camp, Junior Achievement (JA) of Central Indiana recently announced their JA BizTown Summer Camp program will be offered virtually.
The week-long online camp is offered at no cost through June and July for kids ages 9 to 12, but campers of all ages are invited to participate. Each day’s activities are expected to last approximately one hour, Monday through Friday. While there are several live opportunities, campers can participate online at their own pace whenever they choose. The camp is scheduled to run through the week of July 20.
“JA BizTown is one of the most popular programs that kids participate in throughout the year, and the annual JA BizTown summer camp helps keep our young people involved and thinking about their futures while learning in a fun, hands-on environment,” said Jennifer Burk, president and CEO of JA of Central Indiana. “While the COVID-19 pandemic has changed our day-to-day lives and canceled many summer activities, we’re thrilled that JA can continue to support our students through virtual programs like JA BizTown summer camp.”
The virtual camp is offered for five weeks and designed with different topics and speakers each week. Kids can tune in each day for new curriculum, games, speakers and live activities that teach children in the areas of career exploration, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, STEM and philanthropy. Guest speakers and presentations by community organizations include Johnny Magic, the Indy Humane Society, OneAmerica, Nine13sports, Ascension St. Vincent, Republic Airways, the Indianapolis Fire Department and many more. New activities are posted daily and are available all week.
This program is made possible by the Summer Camp Sponsor BKD, LLP, a CPA and advisory firm.
“BKD is proud to once again partner with Junior Achievement by supporting its summer camp to keep young people engaged while at home during these summer months,” said JA Board Member and Partner at BKD, Greg Rexing. “JA’s purpose is to empower young people to own their future success, and in today’s environment, that purpose is more important than ever. Our youth need these guiding principles to prepare them for whatever the future may hold.”
