Richard Allan Purdy

February 21, 1938 – April 24, 2020

Richard Allan Purdy, 92, Sheridan, passed away on Friday morning, April 24, 2020 at Autumn Trace of Rensselaer, Ind. Born February 21, 1938 in Boone County, he was the son of the late Harold “Doc” Purdy and Ruby (Perigo) Purdy.

A 1956 graduate of Sheridan High School, Richard served his country as a Military Police Officer, stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. After his service in the United States Army was complete, he returned to Indiana and entered the workforce. For several years, Richard worked as a fabricator with Kirby and Son Machine Fabricators in Noblesville. He later hired on with General Motors as a tool and die setter, eventually retiring from the company.

Richard was a loving husband and father, and a devoted grandfather. Retirement afforded him lots of time to devote to his grandchildren and countless hours to spend fishing with “the gang.”

Richard is survived by his son, Stephen Purdy (April), Noblesville; daughter, Stacy Castor (James), Remington; four grandchildren, Jessica Gentry (Jordan), Jennifer Castor, Kaitlin Purdy and Stephen Connor Purdy; great-grandchildren, Crew Gentry, Grady Gentry and Beau Randle; sister, Lonna Inskeep (Phil), Rensselaer; brother-in-law, Dan McVey; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Doc and Ruby Purdy; infant daughter, Tracy Ann Purdy; sisters, Myra McVey and Lynn Hume; brother-in-law, Larry Hume; and by the love of his life, his wife, Carol Ann (Bess) Purdy, on June 20, 2014. She and Richard were married on August 22, 1959.

Through the recommendation of our public health officials with regards to public health and safety, private family services will be held at this time. A celebration of life is being planned for a later date. Richard will be laid to rest at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be presented to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements have been entrusted to Kercheval Funeral Home in Sheridan.
