Indiana Connections Academy student Mae Farmer has advanced through the semifinals of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program Scholarship selection process. Farmer, a senior, was selected from more than 93,000 applicants based on her academic achievements, extracurricular involvement and community service.
For Farmer, who works two jobs in addition to attending school full-time, the flexible schedule at Indiana Connections Academy accommodated her academic needs while allowing her to balance different priorities.
Online schooling, however, was not how Farmer originally envisioned completing her education. She attended a traditional brick-and-mortar school until her sophomore year of high school when health complications made abiding by a rigid academic schedule impossible.
“If you would have asked me even at the beginning of high school if I would be doing online school and be where I am today, I would have thought you were crazy,” Farmer said. “Seeing how far I’ve come makes me want to do better and better and exceed my expectations of myself and what I’m capable of.”
Having earned the title of semifinalist, Farmer is currently working to advance to regional finals for the $20,000 scholarship. At this stage in the process, Farmer is completing an in-depth online application to be reviewed by the Program Reading Committee in January. After this review, 250 applicants will advance as Regional Finalists and 150 will become Coca-Cola Scholars.
