COVID-19 no threat to water quality

Carmel committed to delivering water that exceeds EPA guidelines

The City of Carmel Water and Wastewater Utility wishes its customers to know that during this challenging time period, the Utility is prepared and has the needed systems and personnel in place to continue with the safe delivery of drinking water and sanitary sewer service that meets all federal guidelines.

The Utility has a combined total of 25 State of Indiana certified operators in place to operate and maintain the city’s water and wastewater infrastructure. The operators, along with additional personnel, have been cross-trained in numerous operational procedures. The systems in place offer redundancy in emergency situations, and there is more than adequate capacity to readily serve the public.

Regarding the overall safety of drinking water as it relates to COVID-19, the Environmental Protection Agency has released the following statement:

“There is no higher priority for EPA than protecting the health and safety of Americans. EPA is providing this important information about COVID-19 as it relates to drinking water and wastewater to provide clarity to the public. The COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking-water supplies. Based on current evidence, the risk to water supplies is low. Americans can continue to use and drink water from their tap as usual.

“EPA has established regulations with treatment requirements for public water systems that prevent waterborne pathogens such as viruses from contaminating drinking water and wastewater. COVID-19 is a type of virus that is particularly susceptible to disinfection and standard treatment and disinfectant processes are expected to be effective.”

Carmel Utilities Water Treatment Plants have been recognized as exceeding all EPA requirements and stands ready to meet the City’s needs.

Indiana American Water customers can count on access to clean water

At Indiana American Water (IAW), the health and safety of customers, communities and employees is a top priority. IAW provides an essential service that is critically important, and like many other companies in the U.S. and across the globe, IAW has established coronavirus preparedness plans.

It is important for you to know that IAW’s drinking water treatment barriers provide protection that includes filtration and disinfection of surface water supplies (e.g., those from lakes, reservoirs, or rivers) and disinfection of ground water sources (e.g., underground wells). These treatments are effective in removing and/or inactivating viruses. IAW water meets all current federal and state drinking water requirements.

To minimize the risk of exposure to the coronavirus (COVID-19), IAW has initiated its business continuity plans to help provide additional stability to operations that include water/wastewater services to homes and businesses.

IAW continues to monitor situational updates provided by the Center for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, as well as other state and federal organizations. IAW is continuously evaluating the situation and latest developments to determine how measures can be adopted and amended as necessary to support customers, communities and IAW employees.

In an effort to keep customers safe during the coronavirus pandemic, IAW will place a moratorium and discontinuing service shut offs at this time. This moratorium will continue to be evaluated as more information becomes available. Additionally, IAW will begin the restoration of service to previously shut-off customers. The restoration may take some time, but IAW says it will work as quickly and safely as possible. If your service was turned off prior to March 12, IAW says it will restart your service.

IAW has been focused on two high priorities as the spread of the coronavirus has evolved: The health and safety of IAW employees and the health and safety of IAW customers. As such, IAW will also suspend all non-essential field appointments and will limit the amount and nature of contact with customers during all emergency field appointments.
