Have you ever wondered why police do what they do? Do you want to learn about the Carmel Police Department? If you answered yes, CPD has an exciting opportunity for you.
Twice a year, CPD conducts its Citizens’ Academy. This program provides insight on the operations of the department as well as an opportunity for the department to learn about citizen concerns.
The academy is an 11-week series of classes on policing. Classes are taught by various members of the Carmel Police Department who provide instruction and information regarding their particular area of expertise, allowing citizens the opportunity for an in depth look into how the department operates. Classes meet one evening per week and each week has different topics. Academy curriculum includes overviews of investigations, patrol, support, school resource unit, and administration.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and will be subject to a criminal background check. Class size is limited to 16 people. This is not a police officer candidate school nor an open forum to discuss grievances; rather, an opportunity to educate citizens on the operations of CPD and for the department to engage communication with citizens.
