Wrestling sectionals: Carmel dominates at Frankfort, Millers take second at Elwood

The Carmel wrestling team continued its sectional championship streak on Saturday with a dominant performance at Frankfort’s historic Case Arena.
The Greyhounds scored 284.5 points to win the Frankfort sectional. It’s the fifth title in a row for Carmel, and the 25th in program history. In addition, the ‘Hounds qualified 13 wrestlers on to next Saturday’s North Montgomery regional after they all finished in the top four in their respective weight classes.
Nine Carmel wrestlers won individual sectional championships, starting with senior Suhas Chundi at 106 pounds. Sophomore Brac Hooper was next, taking the 113-pound title with a 3-2 sudden victory win over previously unbeaten Frankfort sophomore Elijah Anthony. Senior Joey Langeman also won a final over an unbeaten wrestler, edging out Lebanon senior Camren Toole in a 5-4 decision.
Other Carmel winners were senior Brendan Mattingly at 138, junior Jake Shafer at 145, senior Jackson Mitchell at 160, senior Gabe Davin at 170, senior Garrett Sharp at 182 and senior Haakon Van Beynen at 220.
Sophomore TJ Barrett was the runner-up at 132 pounds, with junior Zach White taking second at 195. Rounding out Carmel’s regional qualifiers were senior Paul Ginella, third place at 152, and sophomore Luke Farling, who took fourth at 120.
Westfield edged out Hamilton Southeastern for second place, with the Shamrocks scoring 202 and the Royals totaling 199.5. Southeastern had 11 regional qualifiers to Westfield’s 10, but the ‘Rocks claimed three individual champions.
Senior Carson Eldred ran his record to 33-1 after winning the 120-pound division, while senior Milo Merkle won at 132 pounds. Sophomore Alec McLaren won the 152-pound championship with a third-period fall.
Sophomore Braxton Vest was the runner-up at 106 pounds, while sophomore Mihails Platonov placed second at 285. The Shamrocks also had five wrestlers in the third-place matches, and the Shamrocks won all five of them, giving them extra team points.
Westfield’s third-place finishers were: Junior Dylan Driver at 113, senior Brady Drlik at 126, junior Seth Martin at 182, junior Gabe Arvin at 195 and junior Dakota Arvin at 220.
The Royals had one individual champion, with senior Andrew Irick taking the 285-pound match in a fall. Irick is 27-1 for the season. Southeastern had five runners-up: Senior Jacob Simone at 120, junior Jake Lemieux at 138, senior Reece Luhmann at 145, senior Ronan Hiner at 170 and sophomore Max Broom at 182.
Three more Royals sophomores took third: Mat Benson at 106. Gaige Lloyd at 132 and Ryan Cast at 160. Juniors Trevon Ternoir (at 152) and Devin Dudley (at 220) placed fourth.
Fishers finished fourth in the team standings with 140 points and sent eight wrestlers on to the regional. Senior JD Farrell won the 195-pound championship for the Tigers, improving to 32-1 after taking the match on a second-period fall.
Senior 120-pounder PJ Pritchett and 145-pound junior Tyler Lindamood each placed third. Fishers had five fourth-place finishers: Freshman Griffin Ingalls at 113, sophomore Zachary Strueder at 126, junior Dylan Parodi at 132, junior Josh Thompson at 138 and sophomore James Carroll at 170.
Sheridan placed seventh as a team with 50 points. Five Blackhawks placed fifth: Sophomore Austin Bond at 120, freshman Evan Tilton at 138, senior Mace Bond at 145 and freshman Peyton Cross at 182.

Over at Elwood, Noblesville finished as runner-up for the second year in a row. The Millers won a three-team race for second place, scoring 166 points to Frankton’s 164 and Hamilton Heights’ 157. Pendleton Heights won the team championship, totaling 201.5 points.
More importantly, Noblesville qualified 10 wrestlers to next Saturday’s regional at Pendleton Heights. The Millers were led by senior Dewayne Simpson, who took the 160-pound sectional title with a 15-12 decision win over Tipton sophomore Brogan London.
“I was very proud of Dewayne Simpson,” said Noblesville coach Michael Weimer. “I found him in the hallway. Three years later, he’s a sectional champion.”
Sophomore Cesar Sierra was the runner-up at 138 pounds. Three more Miller wrestlers placed third, all with a pin in the third-place match: Sophomores Seth Stone at 182 pounds and Jacob Long at 220 pounds, and senior Adam Rider at 285 pounds.
Noblesville had five fourth-place finishers, all getting a ticket to the regional: Senior Cade Iles at 106, sophomore Keaton Sepiol at 126, junior Tim Alexander at 132, senior Evans at 170 and sophomore Jacob Etchison at 195. In case you’re counting, that’s five sophomores advancing for the Millers.
“It’s really exciting to see the sophomore class that we have,” said Weimer.
The Huskies advanced nine wrestlers to the regional. That included senior Kolton Myers, who won the 182-pound sectional title with a 3-2 decision over Pendleton Heights sophomore Colin Gillespie.
Three Heights junior wrestlers were runners-up: Isaiah Rodriguez at 106, Devonte Henson at 132 and Cooper Mansfield at 145. Freshman Josh Brown placed third at 195 pounds, and four more Huskies finished fourth: Sophomore Charlie Brown at 152, senior Alex Kraus at 160, senior Alex Naylor at 220 and freshman Mason Moran at 285.
Guerin Catholic placed seventh as a team with 75 points. Senior Jeff Dunasky Jr. became a three-time sectional champion, winning at 145 pounds by a technical fall over Heights’ Mansfield in the only all-county final. Two more Golden Eagles wrestlers placed third and advanced to the regional: Senior Jon Koscal at 126 and junior Brayden Hall at 170.
