Three more Hamilton County wrestling teams finished up their regular seasons on Thursday, and all three will meet again next weekend.
Hamilton Heights won an all-county dual meet with Guerin Catholic 57-20 at the Huskies’ gym, while Noblesville took care of Elwood 72-10 at The Mill. All four of those teams will compete at the Elwood sectional next Saturday, and the post-season was definitely on everyone’s mind.
The Huskies also had their Senior Night festivities after the meet. Heights coach Gary Myers said his team had several junior varsity wrestlers compete and win, noting that the team “just wanted to get the guys that needed to wrestle some wins for sectionals, for seeding.” The coach was pleased with the effort, saying its performance was “really good tonight.”
Huskies wrestlers getting pins were Charles Brown (152 pounds), Josh Brown (195), Alex Naylor (220), Devonte Henson (132) and Jake Brinker (138).
Meanwhile, Guerin Catholic’s state-ranked Jeff Dunasky opened the meet with a fall at 145 pounds. Brayden Hall also got a pin, at 170.
Heights also honored senior Markaela Pugh, who finished as state runner-up and won the Mental Attitude Award at the fourth annual Indiana High School Girls Wrestling state tournament last Saturday at Kokomo. Pugh was a medal winner all four years, making her a pioneer in the still rising sport of girls wrestling.
“I love it,” said Pugh, who already has offers to wrestle in college. “It’s growing literally every day. It’s huge and I love it. I love to see new girls coming every day, that’s just awesome to see the program grow so quickly.”
In a match earlier this week, the Huskies fell to Delta 39-34. It was a back and forth dual meet, with the Eagles winning the last two bouts to take the team victory. Three Heights wrestlers won by pin: Cooper Mansfield at 152, Kolton Myers at 182 and Alijah Reynolds at 106.
MILLERS DOMINATE
Noblesville won 12 of the 14 matches against the Panthers, opening with three pins in a row from Adam Rider (285), Cade Iles (106) and Will Cash (113). The Millers got four more falls later in the meet, from Keaton Sepiol (126), Josh Evans (170), Seth Stone (182) and Jacob Long (220).
“I was really proud of our guys,” said Noblesville coach Michael Weimer. “They understood the importance of this dual with it being a sectional seed, sectionals coming up next Saturday. Every dual’s important, but when the sectional seed’s on the line, you take it to another level, which our kids did. I was very proud of that.”
