Carmel girls, boys take care of Trojans

Both Carmel basketball teams were in action Friday night, with the girls and boys each playing Center Grove in a Metropolitan Conference game.
The locations were different – the Greyhounds girls played at the Trojans gym, while the boys hosted CG at the Eric Clark Activity Center. The result was the same, however, as both teams won.
Carmel’s girls won their game 41-35. Center Grove led the Greyhounds 13-9 after the first quarter, but Carmel came back to tie the game at 19-19 by halftime. The ‘Hounds then took over in the third period, outscoring the Trojans 12-2, and that carried them through the fourth quarter.
Kate Clarke poured in 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Bridget Dunn had an outstanding game, tallying a double-double of 14 rebounds and 11 points; she also blocked seven shots. Riley Pennington collected seven rebounds and Clarke pulled five. Fatima Valiente dished out four assists.
Meanwhile, Carmel’s boys got off to a solid start against Center Grove, leading 13-7 after the first quarter. The ‘Hounds turned it up in the second period, leading 35-14 at halftime. The Trojans tried to make a comeback in the second half, but the Greyhounds were able to hold on for the victory.
Jackson Jannsen made three 3-pointers on his way to 14 points, while Wil Leary also had 14 points. Charlie Williams added 11 points. Peter Suder had a great all-around game, with nine points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocked shots.
Carmel’s girls are 3-2 in the MIC and 9-6 overall. They will play Fort Wayne South Side today in an afternoon home game. The Greyhounds boys are 2-1 in conference play and 6-3 overall; they travel to Westfield tonight for an all-county game.
