The Hamilton Southeastern wrestling team pushed a tough, No. 6-ranked Avon team throughout a Tuesday Hoosier Crossroads Conference dual meet, before falling 36-25 at the Orioles’ gym.
The Royals got out to a 12-10 lead after the first four matches. After dropping the first match, Southeastern got a sudden-victory win from sophomore Ryan Cast at 160 pounds, then classmate Charlie Irish won an exciting decision at 170 to tie the score at 6-6.
Sophomore Max Broom scored a first-period pin at 182 pounds to get the Royals up 12-6. Avon won the next three bouts to take a 19-12 lead and would hold the lead from there.
But Southeastern kept fighting. Sophomore Mat Benson won the 106-pound match in a major decision. Later, unbeaten Jacob Simone took the 120-pound bout with a fall, and the Royals were within 25-22 with three matches left. Avon won the next two to clinch the dual, but Southeastern got the last word, as senior Reece Luhmann upset Jaden Reynolds, the No. 3-ranked wrestler at 145 pounds, 9-3 to finish the meet.
The Royals are back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Zionsville.
Noblesville lost an HCC dual meet to Zionsville, 49-15 Tuesday at The Mill.
The Millers got three wins. Jacob Long picked up a victory at 220 pounds with a pin in the second period. Seth Stone won at 182 pounds on a close decision, and Cade Iles took the 106-pound match by forfeit.
