Girls soccer sectionals: Royals and Tigers advance, ‘Hawks win first game in shootout

Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers advanced to a Class 3A Sectional 8 semi-final showdown after posting first-round wins on Tuesday at the Royals’ field.
No. 3-ranked Southeastern beat Muncie Central 10-0. Izzie Wallace and Kaitlynne Wallace both scored two goals, with Ava Marquardt, Maddy Bellaver, Molly Harris, Ashley Wilson, Izzie Johnson, and Kiley Jones. Wilson had two assists, with Olivia Smith, Layla Brown, Izzie Wallace and Harris each making one. Izzie Wallace tied the Royals’ single-season scoring record with her second goal.
“Tournament time, focus on one game at a time,” said Southeastern coach Greg Davidson. “So we did our job tonight. A lot of girls played, a lot of girls got opportunities tonight.”
The No. 9 Tigers beat Pendleton Heights 2-0 in Tuesday’s second game. The Arabians held Fishers scoreless in the first half, but the Tigers quickly took the lead in the second half when Kaysey Castro converted a penalty kick 67 seconds into the half. Castro later scored Fishers’ second goal.
The Royals (15-2) and the Tigers (9-1-5) will play each other at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the first semi-final. That will be followed by the second semi-final between No. 2 Noblesville and Anderson.

Sheridan got its first win of the season at the best possible time: In the first round of Class 1A Sectional 37, which the Blackhawks are hosting.
Sheridan beat Eastern in a penalty-kick shootout 3-1. There were times the Blackhawks had to play with only nine players due to injuries, but they continued to play tough defense.
Neither team scored in regulation or overtime, so the game went to penalty kicks. Katie Cuevas made two big saves as goalkeeper, and Makaela Mosolf, Chaney Smith and Clair Purciful each made kicks to give Sheridan the win.
The ‘Hawks will play Tri-Central at 5 p.m. Thursday in the first semi-final, followed by the second semi-final between No. 4 University and No. 10 Tipton.

Guerin Catholic won its first-round match at Class 3A Sectional 10 at Carmel Tuesday, beating Pike 4-0.
Anna Heck got the first goal, followed by Anna Schultheis scoring off an assist by Caroline Quinn. Emersen Jennings was next, and her goal, assisted by Schultheis, put the Golden Eagles up 3-0 at halftime. Schultheis completed the scoring in the second half, with Hailey Abel making the assist.
Guerin Catholic is 5-6-2 and will play North Central in the second semi-final at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The first semi-final will be contested at 5 p.m. Thursday by No. 1 Carmel and No. 18 Zionsville. The Eagles beat Westfield 1-0 in a Monday first-round game. The Shamrocks finished their season 9-7-1.

Hamilton Heights, ranked No. 18 in Class 2A, won its first-round match at Sectional 24 at New Castle, cruising past Jay County 5-0.
Maria Mitchell scored the Huskies’ first goal off a corner kick by Emma Hall. Mitchell then scored two more goals in the half, with Jenna Peterson assisting her third score. Peterson also got a first-half goal.
Cassidy Felger added a second-half goal. Kendyll Ferguson and Jayla Logan both made assists, and Tessa Harr had two saves and Jenn Houser made one.
Heights is 11-2-4 and plays Delta in the second semi-final at 7 p.m. Thursday, following the first semi-final between New Castle and No. 20 Yorktown.
