Volleyball: Fishers, Southeastern improve to 2-0 in HCC

The Fishers volleyball team won an all-county and Hoosier Crossroads Conference match with Noblesville on Thursday in straight sets, 25-17, 25-10, 25-17.
With the victory, the Tigers improved to 2-0 in HCC play. Fishers had a balanced attack, with Emily Waldrop, Jada Allen and Camryn Haworth all hitting eight kills. Mikayla Christiansen and Grace Dunnuck both put down four kills and Ava Vickers had two. Emily Brewer handed out 17 assists, with Haworth dishing out nine. Waldrop served six aces and Olivia Lux had three.
“We have a lot of different players playing a lot of different positions than last year, so we are really thinking long term and big picture when it comes to the weeks of volleyball matches that we’re playing, and we’re thinking big picture on progressing all the way to Oct. 17,” said Fishers coach Steven Peek.
On defense, Bryn Roberts picked up 13 digs, followed by Brewer with eight, Waldrop with seven and Haworth with four. Allen made six blocks and Vickers had four.
For the Millers, Lexie Almodovar had an all-around solid game with 15 assists, 12 kills, seven digs and four blocks. Rose Crist contributed six kills and five digs. Riley Branch handed out 10 assists, Olivia Gulley picked up nine digs and Anna Kiser made three blocks.
“We’re just trying to find a lineup that we can flow with and that’s the best,” said Noblesville coach Jill Almodovar. “It puts people in the best positions to be successful and we still haven’t found that yet. So we’re just kind of waiting.”
Fishers plays at Providence on Saturday, while the Millers are off until Tuesday when they host McCutcheon.

Hamilton Southeastern also improved to 2-0 in the HCC on Thursday by winning at Avon in straight sets, 26-24, 25-7, 25-10.
Delaney Garner led the Royals’ offense with 15 kills and three blocks, while Abby Weber put down 13 kills. Carly Mills led the Southeastern defense with 20 digs, with Lillian Leiner collecting 13 digs. Grace Hunter had six kills and three aces.
“I thought both of our setters were really strong tonight. Olivia Phillips had 16 assists and Emily Weber had 15 assists,” said Royals coach Jason Young. “They were a big reason we were so successful offensively tonight.”
Southeastern is off until Tuesday when it hosts Yorktown.

Westfield dropped its HCC opener to Zionsville Thursday in four sets at The Rock.
The teams split the first two sets, then the Eagles won the next two sets. Zionsville took the fourth set 32-30 in a wild, extended set that featured multiple match points for the Eagles and multiple set points for the Shamrocks.
“We competed in spurts,” said Westfield coach Sandra Burks. “We are continuing to work on the consistency. We talk a lot about keeping our foot on the pedal and finishing matches and it’s something that we need to keep working on.”

Sheridan dropped a three-set match to Eastern on Thursday, 25-15, 25-13, 25-8.
Allie Delph collected six digs and served two aces for the Blackhawks. Cheyenne Brooks hit four kills and had one solo block. Taylor Bates handed out three assists.
The Sheridan junior varsity team lost 25-8, 17-25, 15-6. Kaiden Wilson had a solid all-around game with seven digs, four assists, three kills, two aces and one solo bock. Zoey Fisher picked up nine digs and Jacquellyne Bates had seven digs and four assists.
The Blackhawks travel to Clinton Prairie on Saturday for a tournament.
