Baseball: Royals win Game 2 over ‘Rocks, take lead HCC

Hamilton Southeastern broke out of a 2-2 tie with Westfield in the sixth inning, scoring a run and a victory over the Shamrocks 3-2 at Ken Seitz Field. The win gave Southeastern a split in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference series.
Westfield scored a run in the first inning; Bryce Dorton and Trey Anderson hit back-to-back singles, and Dorton followed that with a double to get Dorton home. In the fifth inning, it was Dorton’s turn to hit a double, and that scored Maximus Webster, putting the ‘Rocks up 2-0.
The Royals got on the board in the fifth inning. Jack DeWolf got on with a single, then Jake Stout came in to courtesy run for him. Greyson Droste hit a single, moving Stout to third base. Matt Buckingham doubled in Stout, and later, Cam Bolling singled home Buckingham, tying the game.
Southeastern took the lead in the sixth inning, Cole DeWael scored when Buckingham drew a bases-loaded walk. Dorton hit a double to begin the top of the seventh inning, but the Royals got the next three batters to preserve the win.
Tyler Schweitzer pitched five innings for the win, striking out nine. Cole Graverson threw the last two innings for the save. Dorton finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate.
Southeastern is now 8-4 in the conference and leads the standings, while the Shamrocks are 7-5. The Royals finish HCC play next week with two games against Franklin Central. Overall, HSE is 13-7 and hosts Cathedral on Monday. Westfield is 10-8 and plays Monday at Kokomo.

Huskies beat Twin Lakes

Hamilton Heights finished Hoosier Conference play on a winning note Friday, beating Twin Lakes 5-0 in a conference placement game at the Indians’ field.
The Huskies scored their first run in the fourth inning, when Sam Wahl got home on an error. In the fifth inning, Alex Hewitt got on with a left field double, and Sam Allen batted him in with a hit to right field.
Heights added three more runs in the seventh inning. Erik Malott singled in Allen, then Andrew VanOeveren batted in Wahl and Brody Piel.
Allen, Wahl and Nate Hulen all had two hits. Sam Fulton pitched a complete game, striking out nine.
“Sam Fulton was terrific,” said Huskies coach JR Moffatt. “It’s the best command he’s had so far this spring. Offensively we made some things happen and got some key hits. We have struggled all season at the plate but this week playing five nights in a row helped a bunch.”
Heights is 8-9 and plays at Class 2A No. 5 Alexandria on Monday.

Millers bounce back to earn split with Bulldogs

Noblesville bounced back on Friday to beat Brownsburg 5-4 at Don Dunker Field, earning a Hoosier Crossroads Conference split with the Bulldogs.
Brownsburg scored one run in the first inning, but a two-RBI single from Grant Braun in the second inning gave the Millers the lead, and they held it thereafter. Matt Peek and Brady Walden both scored.
In the fourth inning, Zach Gruver hit a right field double to send Peek home. Braun came up next and hit his second two-RBI single of the game, sending Walden and Gruver in to home. Braun was 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the seventh inning, but Ethan Leslie struck out the final batter to clinch the win. Camden Nagel got the win, throwing six innings and allowing three hits.
Noblesville is 14-11 and plays at 7 p.m. tonight at Northwestern.

‘Hounds fall to Panthers, split MIC series

Carmel dropped the second game of a Metropolitan Conference series with North Central on Friday, falling 7-1 at Hartman Field, with the series finishing in a split.
The Greyhounds scored their run in the seventh inning, when Conner Gioia reached home after an error.
Aiden Bradbury pitched six innings for Carmel, striking out eight.
The ‘Hounds are 10-2 in MIC play and 15-7 overall. Carmel starts another conference series Tuesday at Warren Central.

Golden Eagles beat Ritter at Purdue

Guerin Catholic sailed to a 6-0 win over Cardinal Ritter in a Friday game played at Alexander Field at Purdue University.
Playing as the home team, the Golden Eagles scored three runs in the third inning. Nate Bingman doubled in Josh Schaff and Wes Gingerich, then Luke Godfrey’s center field hit scored Bingman.
Guerin added two runs in the fifth inning. Bennett Ely singled in Gingerich, then Godfrey hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Keenan Taylor. Ely got another RBI in the sixth inning, with a center field hit to scored Schaaf.
Gingerich was 3-for-3 at the plate, with Ely getting two hits. Sam Lewandowski pitched a complete game, striking out four and allowing only four hits.
The Golden Eagles are 18-3 and will play Andrean Monday at Notre Dame.

Tigers split HCC doubleheader with Franklin Central

Fishers split a Hoosier Crossroads Conference doubleheader with Franklin Central Friday at the Tigers’ field.
The Flashes won the first game 4-3. The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning; Grant Whetsel got the first run by stealing home, then Daniel Owens singled in Kiel Brenczewski.
Franklin Central got a run back in the top of the second, but Fishers answered with a third-inning score. Whetsel got home on Brenczewski’s RBI groundout. The Flashes scored a run in the sixth inning, then added two more in the seventh to get the win.
Whetsel and Owens both finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate, with Owens hitting a third-inning double. Tristan Baker threw seven strikeouts in a complete game.
The Tigers rebounded to take Game 2 by the score of 8-5. Fishers was the away team, as this was a make-up game that was to take place at the Franklin Central field.
The Tigers never trailed in the game. They scored their first run in the second inning when JJ Woolwine drew a bases-loaded walk, sending Kaid Muth home. Fishers let loose for four runs in the third inning: Jeffrey Simmons and Owens scored when Jake Preston reached on error, then Woolwine doubled in Preston and Muth.
Woolwine got another RBI in the sixth inning, when his right field hit sent Muth home. Woolwine finished the game 2-for-2 and drove in four runs. In the sixth inning, Brenczewski hit a two-run home run, also scoring Nick Lukac.
Jon Vore pitched three innings for the win, while Cory Wolter got the save by throwing the last two innings.
Fishers is 6-6 in HCC play and 13-13 overall. The Tigers next play on Monday when they host Class 4A No. 5 Columbus North.
