History was made at the Hamilton County boys track and field meet, as the Tigers roared to the championship.
Fishers won the county boys meet for the first time in school history, edging out Carmel and Hamilton Southeastern. The Tigers scored 140 points at the meet, which took place Thursday at Guerin Catholic. The Greyhounds finished second with 133 points, with the Royals a close third with 132.
Fishers won five events, including both throwing events. Wyatt Puff was first in the discus, then Hayden Tobias and Puff took first and second, giving the Tigers enough points to clinch the trophy.
Fishers had three other event winners: Senior Anthony Campbell finished first in the long jump, while freshman Keefer Soehngen won the 400 dash. Sophomore Jaylen Castillo prevailed in a close 800 run.
Tigers coach Nathan Warnecke was pleased with how his team performed, noting there were “great performances tonight by a bunch of underclassmen” at the meet. This is the last meet for county teams before next Thursday’s sectional at Carmel.
“Carmel’s one heck of a team, so is HSE,” said Warnecke. “Sectional should be fun.”
The Greyhounds won two events. Carmel started the meet with Pat Campbell, Thomas Gastineau, Drew Thornton and Eli Konow placing first in the 4×800 relay. Logan Sandlin led a 1-2 finish for the ‘Hounds in the pole vault, with Jacob Pearson taking second.
The Royals were led by Noah Malone, who continued his domination of the sprints. Malone easily won the 100 and 200 dashes, and was part of Southeastern’s third-place 4×100 relay team. Malone won the high point trophy at the conclusion of the meet.
Westfield finished a solid fourth with 91 points. Cooper Boehm finished first in the 110 hurdles, and the Shamrocks’ team of Alex Kukura, Mario Chalmers, Mason Piening, Francis Agbo won the 4×100 relay.
Noblesville finished fifth with 87 points, winning four events. Blake Hipkiss was first in a close 1600, while Andrew Herman easily won the high jump. Travis Hickner ran away with the 3200 run, and the Millers closed the meet by winning the 4×400 relay; that team consisted of Shomari Rogers-Walton, Mitchell Conard, DeVontez Cox and Herman.
“Really excited for our boys,” said Noblesville coach Bill Kenley. “Just got a lot of good athletes and some coaches that work real well with them.”
Host Guerin Catholic was sixth and had one event winner: Billy Freudenthal was first in the 300 hurdles.
Hamilton Heights placed seventh as a team. Bayden Lutz was the Huskies’ top finisher, placing fourth in the pole vault.
