The Crossroads Chapter of National Charity League (NCL) held its annual awards ceremony to recognize its 2019 scholarship winner along with mothers and daughters (grades 7 through 12) for their community service efforts, which culminated in the chapter donating 2,803 volunteer hours over the past year.
NCL Crossroads Scholarship Winner
The local chapter – the first one in Indiana – has awarded Elizabeth Martine a $500 scholarship for her consistent involvement in community service, leadership and cultural activities. Martine, a senior at Zionsville Community High School, will attend Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business this fall. She plans to pursue a career in Entrepreneurial Business and eventually earn her MBA.
Community service is at the heart of the NCL scholarship and in the heart of Martine. She has been a steadfast volunteer at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church for both Greek Fest and in the Hellenic Dance Troupe. She has served with Best Buddies, The Lord’s Pantry, Women in Engineering at Purdue University and in the Business Professionals of America, among other organizations. After participating in two mission trips to Guatemala, Martine was motivated to get involved with Project Mexico, an organization that helps build homes for deserving families.
Martine also has proven leadership skills. Some of her roles include serving as Vice President and President for Greek Orthodox Youth of America (GOYA). She has played lacrosse at Zionsville Community High School and was the Attack Captain in 2018. Since 2010, she has been a National Parks Jr. Ranger 15 for National Parks of America.
Cultural involvement is another key focus of this scholarship and Martine excels in this area as well. She founded and served as Vice President for her high school Greek Club. In 2017, she participated in the IU Honors Program for Foreign Language, where she studied abroad in Spain. Additionally, she has taken mission trips to Mexico and Guatemala.
Modelette Award
Westfield High School student Chloe Owens received the chapter’s Modelette Award. This award is given to a girl each year who best models the three pillars of the NCL mission: Community service, leadership development and cultural experience. In addition to volunteering as the Vice President of Programs for her NCL class and serving at several NCL philanthropies, Owens helps lead Blankets from Joe, a blanket drive that benefits Indiana University Health Foundation. She also plays volleyball and has been involved with the United Way of Hamilton County Youth Leadership Board.
Mother/Daughter Award
The chapter also recognized eight mother-daughter pairs for volunteering 25 hours together over the past year. The Mother/Daughter Award was given to:

- Susan and Ashlyn Benner (Westfield High School)
- Laura and Isabelle Crum (Westfield High School)
- Abby and Rachel Kovacs (Westfield Middle School)
- Christi and Emma Luedke (Westfield High School)
- Heather and Izzy Monger (Carmel Middle School)
- Tabitha and Maggie O’Neal (Westfield High School)
- Michelle and Alexis Paterson (Westfield High School)
Yellow Rose Bud Award
Two Westfield High School juniors, Emma Luedke and Alexis Paterson, received the Yellow Rose Bud Award for donating 50 hours of service to NCL philanthropies.
Yellow Rose & Mission Bell Awards
Additionally, Ashlyn Benner and Maggie O’Neal, also from Westfield High School, were awarded the Yellow Rose Award for completing 75 hours of service to the chapter’s philanthropy partners. Benner and O’Neal also received the chapter’s Mission Bell Award for volunteering 50 hours of service to one NCL Crossroads philanthropy partner. Both girls earned the award for volunteering at Wheeler Mission.
