Tigers fall to Westfield, rebound against Pendleton Heights

Westfield beat Fishers 7-1 in an all-county and Hoosier Crossroads Conference game Monday at the Shamrocks’ field.
The Tigers scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning; Tristan Baker stole second base and Collin Shelton ran home on the throw to second.
The Shamrocks got on the board in the third inning with three runs. Bryce Dorton hit a sacrifice fly for the first run, scoring Austin Wessel. Tyler Smitherman came to the plate next, and he singled home Luke Hutson and Trey Anderson.
Westfield kept going in the fourth inning with three more runs. Hutson bunted home Andy Manzur, then Anderson doubled in Hutson. Dorton then picked up his second RBI of the game with a center field hit to score Anderson.
Dorton made it three RBIs for the game when he singled home Jackson Preston in the sixth inning. Dorton was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Anderson went 3-for-4, including two doubles. Payton Tamm pitched four innings for the win, with Mason Cox relieving him for the save.
“This was a good win for us against a well coached Fishers team,” said Shamrocks coach Ryan Bunnell. “And it was important for us to get this win and stay in the hunt for the HCC crown. Payton Tamm and Mason Cox were really good for us on the mound tonight. Both threw a lot of strikes and mixed their pitches well. Trey Anderson, Bryce Dorton and Tyler Smitherman continued to swing the bat well with big nights tonight.
“When we compete against the game and try to play as clean a game as well can…when we can do that we are tough to beat. I think our kids are starting to see that and it’s exciting, because if they ‘get it’ I think the sky is the limit. We just have to keep getting better, not be satisfied with where we are and keep growing.”
Westfield is 6-3 and begins a three-game series with Noblesville on Thursday.
Fishers rebounded on Tuesday by beating Pendleton Heights 3-2 at the Tigers’ field.
Locked in a scoreless pitchers’ duel through five innings, the Arabians were able to manufacture a run in the top of the sixth to take a 1-0 lead. The Tigers responded in the bottom of the sixth: Nick Lukac led the inning off with a walk. Dominic Oliverio followed with a single, his second hit of the night. The next batter Kiel Brenczewski hit a ball back up the middle that the pitcher was able to knock down. The Arabian pitcher tried to get the out at second base, but his throw took the fielder off the base to load the bases with no outs for the Tigers. Daniel Owens walked to score Lukac and tie that game at 1-1. After a strikeout, Grant Whetsel scored Oliverio on a hard hit ground ball to second to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
With two outs and a runner on second in the top of the seventh, the Tigers appeared to be headed to a 2-1 victory, but a defensive miscue allowed the runner to score from second and tie the game at 2-2.
The Tigers once again responded as Kaid Muth reached on a three base error when a deep fly ball bounced off the glove of the right fielder.  The Arabians intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases with no outs.  With the infield drawn in to cut down the winning run at home, Oliverio hit one of the hardest balls of the night right at the second baseman, who was able to double off the Tigers runner at first for a line drive double play. Now with two outs, Brenczewski was intentionally walked to load the bases again.  After working the count to a full count, Owens received the game winning RBI on a bases loaded walk.
“We won, which is good,” said Tigers coach Matthew Cherry. “Our guys had a little bit better approaches tonight at the plate, even though it didn’t look like it on the scoreboard. We ran ourselves out of a couple innings, but got ourselves back in position to win and we were able to do it.”
Oliverio had two hits, while Owens hit a double. Michael Hart got the pitching win, throwing the final inning.
Fishers will play its annual Mudsock Series with Hamilton Southeastern this weekend. The first game is Thursday at the Royals’ Ken Seitz Field.
