Gymnaworld’s Chelsea Jones competed in the United States Gymnastics (USAG) Region 5 Championships in Battle Creek, Mich. on Saturday and came away with a spot on the Region 5 Level 9 Senior 5 Eastern National Dream Team. Jones will now prepare for the USAG Eastern National Championships that will take place May 8 to 11 in Kissimmee, Fla.
The 2019 USAG Region 5 Championships in Battle Creek consisted of gymnasts from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan who earned the minimum All-Around scores in their respective State Championship meets. The top nine gymnasts at each Level and division in the All-Around competitions go on to compete in their Level’s USAG National Championships.
Jones, who competes for Noblesville’s Gymnaworld Gymnastics, earned her way onto the Dream Team by placing fourth on the balance beam (9.350) and posting consistent solid scores on the vault (9.225), uneven bars (8.850), and floor exercise (9.150). Jones’ total score of 36.575 gave her eighth place in the All-Around competition and earned her a spot on the nine-man Region 5 Level 9 Senior 5 Eastern National Dream Team that will compete against all other United States regional teams.
Jenna Jones, Chelsea Jones’ sister, competed in the Level 10 Senior F division. Jenna Jones finished in a 5th place tie on the balance beam with a 9.375 score. And although having her personal best floor exercise routine of the season with a 9.225 score, she did not place in any other event or in the All-Around competition. The regional meet over the weekend was Jones’ final gymnastics competition for Gymnaworld Gymnastics. She will go on to compete collegiately next season.
The Jones sisters were the only Hamilton County gymnasts who qualified for the USAG Level 9/10 Region 5 Championships in their respective Levels and age divisions.
