Carmel Police School Resource Officers responded to the Carmel Learning Center, 515 E. Main St., in reference to a tip that a student was in possession of a loaded handgun.

Officers located the juvenile student and confiscated the handgun without incident. The 17-year-old male juvenile was arrested and taken into custody. The juvenile was later transported to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center on the following charges:
- Possession of Firearms on School Property – Level 6 Felony
- Theft, Receiving Stolen Property – Level 6 Felony
- Carrying a Handgun without a License – Class A misdemeanor
The Learning Center is located across the street from Carmel High School.
Carmel Police Department’s Lt. Joe Bickel said, “We would like to thank the person who quickly notified Carmel Clay School Administration and the swift action taken by school personnel. This solidifies the saying ‘If you see something, say something.’ As a collaborative effort, safety and security in our schools is a top priority and concern.”
