Late surge sends Millers to win at Cathedral

A late surge propelled Noblesville to a season-opening win at Cathedral on Monday.
The Millers used two big hits to take the lead, then cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Irish, last year’s Class 4A runner-up. In addition, Noblesville got an outstanding pitching performance by Clay Holzworth.
The scoring started in the top of the fifth inning, when Lucas Williams and Cooper Miles both drew walks to get on base. With two outs, DJ Owens sent a double into left field to get both runners home. Owens was soon scored himself, as Matt Peek smacked a triple into center field. Two hits, Millers lead, 3-0.
Cathedral got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, cutting Noblesville’s lead to 3-1. But the Millers struck again in the seventh inning, with Owens hitting a sacrifice fly to score Williams, then Peek singled in Cole Barnes. The Irish loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but Barnes caught a fly ball to end the game.
Owens and Peek both had two hits for the game. Meanwhile, Holzworth was dominant on the mound, throwing 15 strikeouts in six innings while allowing only three hits. Miles pitched the seventh inning, striking out two.
Noblesville will make its annual trip to Tennessee later in the week, playing against some of the top teams in that state. The Millers will play at Blackman on Thursday for their first game of the trip.
