The Sheridan baseball team split its first two games of the season early this week.
On Monday, the Blackhawks lost a back and forth game to Lapel 11-9 at the Sheridan field. The Bulldogs scored first in the top of the first inning, but the ‘Hawks added two runs in each of the first two innings. Jacob Vita hit a two-run double in the first inning, then Sheridan got back-to-back RBI doubles from Steve Smith and Jake O’Hara in the second.
Lapel tied the game in the top of the third before the Blackhawks’ Kyle Archer singled in a run in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs again tied the game in the fourth, then took the lead, eventually going ahead 11-5 in the top of the sixth.
Sheridan added a run in the bottom of the sixth, when Cameron Hovey’s RBI groundout scored Cole Bales. The Blackhawks then scored two more RBI groundouts in the seventh, with Reese Fisher sending Silas DeVaney home, and Caine Spencer scoring Walker Casler. Gavin Renners got home on a passed ball, but a groundout ended the game.
Smith and Speck both had two hits. Nolan Buckner pitched four innings, striking out seven.
On Tuesday, the Blackhawks beat the Indy Kings Homeschool team 1-0. Sheridan scored its lone run in the first inning, with Speck’s double sending Hovey home. Speck had another two-hit game for the ‘Hawks, and also got the pitching win, striking out 10 in five and a third innings.
Casler pitched the other two outs of the sixth, then Jacob Vita struck out the side in the seventh to get the save.
Sheridan will host Herron at 5 p.m. today.
