Guerin Catholic broke free from a tight game in the sixth inning, scoring two runs to get Past Heron 7-5 in a Tuesday home game.
The Achaeans scored three runs in the top of the first inning. The Golden Eagles got on the board in the second with two runs: Ana Macha singled in Annabelle Bork, then Macha later scored on an error.
Guerin took the lead in the third inning with three more runs. Izzy Kemp doubled in Hanna Bills, then scored on an error. Lucy Schenk’s double advanced Victoria Flores to third, and Flores stole home seconds later.
Herron tied the game with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Golden Eagles got the lead for good in the sixth inning, starting with a single by Macha. She advanced to third when Aliyah Dorsey cracked a double, then Macha stole home. Madelyn Buckner bunted and reached on error, allowing Dorsey to score.
Macha, Dorsey, Kemp and Schenk all had two hits. Kemp got the pitching win.
“I thought our girls played really well in a close game,” said GC coach Jeff Buckner. “We have a really young team. For them to battle, getting down early, take a lead, give up the lead, keep fighting and eventually come out with a win is really positive, and that’s a 2-1 win in the first game of the year, and this one a 7-5. Playing in those close games is going to pay off later.”
The Golden Eagles are 2-1 and will play three games this weekend in Clarksville, Tenn.
