In a Monday all-county softball game, Carmel beat Westfield 12-2 in five innings at the Shamrocks’ field.
The Greyhounds went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning, with Sarah Goddard hitting an RBI double, then stealing third before scoring on an error. The Shamrocks got a run back on Sara Harmeyer’s RBI single in the bottom of the first.
Carmel extended its lead to 3-1 in the second when Ariana Zdobylak hit an RBI single, then Stormy Kotzelnick stepped up and cracked a two-run home run into center field. The Greyhounds then added six more runs in the third, finishing the scoring with Goddard hitting a two-RBI triple. Maddie Searles singled in Kylie Cunningham early in the inning; Cunningham ran for Brooke Bair, who doubled to start the inning.
Caroline Maymon’s sacrifice fly sent home Harmeyer in the fourth inning to get Westfield’s second run on the board. Jessica Remm singled in Bair in the fifth inning to complete the scoring.
Goddard, Searles and Zdobylak all had two hits, with Goddard driving in three runs. Kaitlyn Grimes pitched a complete game, striking out five. Harmeyer and Avery Parker both had two hits for the ‘Rocks.
On Tuesday, Westfield fell to Franklin Central 15-0 in five innings to open Hoosier Crossroads Conference play. Harmeyer and Natalie Deck both had one hit.
Both teams are back in action tonight: Westfield (1-3) plays at Pendleton Heights while Carmel (1-2) travels to Lebanon.
