Guerin Catholic won its season opener Tuesday, beating Lawrence Central 2-1 at the Golden Eagles’ field.
Guerin scored one run each in the third and the fifth inning. Madelyn Buckner scored Ana Macha for the first run after Buckner bunted into a fielder’s choice. Macha had led off the third inning with a double. Later, Buckner drew a walk, then moved to third on an Alicia Flores double. Izzy Kemp hit a sacrifice fly to send Buckner home.
Flores finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate. She also got the pitching win, tossing four innings and striking out seven against two hits. Kemp threw the other three innings for the save, allowing no hits.
Guerin Catholic will host Shortridge on Thursday.
