Several Hamilton County wrestlers won state championship this past weekend at the Indiana State Wrestling Association Folkstyle State Finals, which took place this past weekend at Warren Central High School.
The Contenders Wrestling Academy won the team championship by scoring 490 points. A young Westfield wrestler helped The Contenders to victory: Connor Maddox, a third-grader at Washington Woods Elementary School, won the Intermediate 10U 43-49 division.
Maddox, 9, won his first three matches by fall, pinning his opponents in less than a minute each time. Maddox then got a major decision victory in the semi-finals, followed by an 8-3 decision win in the championship match. This was the second year in a row that Maddox won a state championship; he won the 10U 45 pounds title last year.
Several Hamilton County-based teams competed at Folkstyle State. Noblesville Wrestling Club finished in 27th place with 61 points, with Carmel USA Wrestling Club taking 28th place by scoring 57 points.
Noblesville had a veteran lead the way, as Scott Kelly finished first in the Veterans 167.5 division. After receiving a quarter-final bye, Kelly won two matches by decision, first over Carroll Wrestling Club’s Erick Adams 2-1 in the semi-finals. Kelly defeated Lebanon Tiger WC’s Jacob King 8-5 in the championship match.
The younger wrestlers were also well-represented, with Gage Yates (Bantam 8U 45) and Austin Hastings (Schoolboy 14U 165) finishing fourth in their respective divisions.
Noblesville coach Michael Weimer said he was proud of each and every one of his wrestlers, noting they had been “training since November” for the championship. He said each wrestler competed hard, had fun and were there to cheer on each other’s teammates.
“This group is a true family,” said Weimer.
Cameron Bacon finished first for the Carmel club in the Junior 195 division. Bacon won his first two matches by pin, then toughed out decision wins in the next three rounds, beating Perry Meridian Wrestling Club’s Austin Lane 7-6 in the championship bout.
Fishers Wrestling Club finished tied for 46th with 43 points, and had two champions. Christopher Tilden won two matches to take the title in the Intermediate 10U 120+ division, beating both of his opponents by fall. Patterson Pritchett was the winner in the Junior 106 division; after a first round bye, Pritchett made two pins to get to the final, then won a 1-0 decision over Warren Wrestling Academy’s Zachary Dray for the championship.
Hamilton Southeastern Wrestling Club also scored 43 points, putting it in the tie for 46th place. A.W. Kirk won a championship for HSE in the Intermediate 10U 120 division. After receiving a first-round bye. VanKirk won two matches by fall, then took the championship match by a 12-0 major decision.
Westfield Wrestling Club scored 14 points at the meet. Kyle Saez finished in second place in the Junior 170 division, winning four matches to get to the championship bout. That included a third-period fall in his semi-final match.
