Cyclist catches second vehicle on Monon Trail

For the second time in less than a week, someone has been caught driving a vehicle on the Monon Trail.

Last week, The Reporter through our news gathering partner WISH-TV shared pictures of a car driving between 111th and 116th streets.

Now, a cyclist caught video of a vehicle driving on the trail on Monday morning.

Ben Matthews posted video to Facebook showing the vehicle on the trail.

He says this driver also appeared to enter at 111th Street.

“They seemed to realize their mistake after almost half a mile, so they turned around and drove back toward 111th St.,” he said in the post.

He said he rides his bike to work most days and that he has never seen anything like this.

“In the thousands of miles I have commuted on or ridden on the Monon, I have never seen someone driving on the Monon (besides police or emergency personnel) until today,” Matthews said. “Maybe better signage needs to be put in place to clear any confusion?”

Carmel Police Department’s Lt. Joe Bickel told the Reporter, “Unless a vehicle has a legitimate/legal reason to be on the Monon Greenway, it would be in violation of our city ordinance which could result in a citation or warning.”

Bickel defined a legitimate vehicle as a police, fire or parks department vehicle.

“The vehicle in the video appears to be in violation of our city ordinance regarding unauthorized vehicles on the Monon Greenway,” said Bickel. “We rarely see vehicles on the Monon Greenway. Carmel Police Officers routinely monitor and enforce city ordinances throughout the year on the Monon. If a pedestrian or bicyclist observes a vehicle on the Monon Greenway, they should move to a safe location, let the car pass and immediately call the Hamilton County Communication Center (317-571-2580) or 9-1-1 to report the incident. They should try to relay as much information as they can regarding the vehicle (description, license plate, direction of travel, etc.).”
