Barbara L. Edwards, 89, passed away Thursday, January 31, 2019 in Indianapolis. She was born in Louisville, Ky. to Smith and Henrietta (Cowherd) Hodges on March 12, 1929.
Barbara graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, attended William Woods College in Fulton, Mo., and graduated from Butler University with a B.S. degree and later a M.S. degree in education.
An elementary school teacher for nearly 50 years, she taught in the Washington Twp. Schools in Indianapolis and Vigo County Schools in Terre Haute. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Women’s Fraternity, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Terre Haute Women’s Department Club and the Terre Haute Newcomers’ Club. She spent her retirement in Florida and Indiana as an avid traveler and master bridge player.
She married Jackson L. Edwards from New Bloomfield, Mo., on June 5, 1948 in Indianapolis. Barbara and Jack enjoyed nearly 50 years together until his death in 1997. Barbara is survived by her children, Donna E. Hoover (John) and David L. Edwards (Becky); grandchildren, Laura Hoover, Sarah Hartmann, Kristen E. Victory and Scott Edwards; and four great-grandsons, Ben, Alex, Hunter and Asher.
Visitation will be held at noon followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 15 at Indiana Funeral Care, Harry W. Moore Chapel in Indianapolis. A private interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
