Wrestling sectionals: Carmel team four-peats, county sends 61 to regionals

Hamilton County’s wrestling teams sent 61 wrestlers on to the regional round after their top four performances at their respective sectionals on Saturday.
Up at Frankfort, Carmel won its fourth consecutive sectional championship. The Greyhounds ran away with the trophy by scoring 275.5 points. Even more importantly, Carmel advanced all 14 of its wrestlers to next Saturday’s regional at North Montgomery.
The ‘Hounds had seven first-place finishers: Suhas Chundi (at 106 pounds), Kyle Holman (138), Joe Theriot (145), Gabe Davin (152), Logan Hart (170), Cameron Bacon (182) and Jack Heldt (195). Carmel thus claimed its 24th sectional title in program history.
Hamilton Southeastern finished second with 208.5 points and got nine wrestlers out to the regional. Three Royals won their respective weight divisions: Jake Simone at 113 pounds, Ronan Hiner at 160, and Andrew Irick at 220. Irick won with a third-period pin, the only wrestler to take the championship match by fall. Irick also remains undefeated for the season at 28-0.
Westfield finished a close third by scoring 191.5 points. The Shamrocks had 10 regional qualifiers and two champions: Carson Eldred won at 120 pounds and Milo Merkel was first at 132 pounds.
Fishers placed fourth with 164 points and advanced 10 to the regional. The Tigers had two runners-up: Tyler Lindamood at 145 and JD Farrell at 182.
Sheridan took eighth as a team with 55 points and had one regional qualifier: Axel Aleman at 138 pounds.

At Elwood, the three participating Hamilton County schools each had one individual champion.
Noblesville led the way, finishing second as a team with 168.5 points and qualifying nine wrestlers to next Saturday’s Pendleton Heights regional. Justin Johnson-Sparks won the championship at 138 pounds.
Hamilton Heights placed fifth with 115 points and sent five wrestlers to the regional. Dreiken Dunn took the title at 152 pounds.
Guerin Catholic scored 67 points to place 10th and had three wrestlers advance to the regional. Jeff Dunasky Jr. claimed the championship at 145 pounds.
