The Westfield boys golf team has accomplished much over the past few years, and added something new to that list on Monday: Defending a conference championship.
The Shamrocks, ranked No. 1 in the state, made it back-to-back Hoosier Crossroads Conference titles by winning this year’s event at Bear Slide. Westfield carded 298. Zionsville finished second with 308, and third-ranked Noblesville placed third with 308.
“It was a great team score for us,” said Shamrocks coach Josh Bryant. “Ethan Lutz leading the charge with 72. Anytime you get that out of your first score, it’s really, really good.”
Lutz tied with Noblesville’s Mitchell Compton for the lowest score; Compton won a one-hole playoff to earn individual medalist honors.
Westfield had four players make the All-Conference team by virtue of a top 12 individual finish at the meet. After Lutz, Josh Kehl finished fourth with 74, Noah Shanteau tied for fifth with 75, and Andrew Lewis was part of a four-way tie for eighth place with a 77.
“We got seniors playing pretty good,” said Bryant. “Josh Kehl and Noah Shanteau’s games have been getting better and better.”
The Millers had three All-Conference players. Compton led the way, followed by Clay Merchent, who tied for fifth with his 75, and Parker Deakyne, who placed 12th with 78.
“I think I played really good,” said Compton. “Obviously there’s a couple shots left out there, a couple putts left on the edge. Overall, I think it was a pretty good round,”
Hamilton Southeastern placed fourth as a team with a 320. Drew Alexander finished seventh with 76 and Jake Hutmacher tied for eighth with 77; both earned All-Conference honors.
Fishers finished fifth with a 331. Shivom Patel was the low man for the Tigers with an 80.
