Richard E. “Rick” Sample

March 13, 1956 – December 31, 2018

Richard E. “Rick” Sample, 62, Sheridan, passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family on Monday morning, December 31, 2018. Born in Lebanon on March 13, 1956, he was the son of the late Glenn Richard “Rick” Sample and Mary Ann (Stewart) Sample-Graham.

He was a 1974 graduate of Sheridan High School. Rick was the maintenance supervisor for Truss Manufacturing for 18 years. After retiring from Truss, he went to work for Total Seeds. He did a little bit of everything at Total Seeds: Maintenance, truck driver and heavy equipment operator. If it needed done, Rick would do it.

When Rick had some time to himself, he loved finding things to do outdoors. He never had to really have a reason to be out doing something, just the time. Rick would never turn down an opportunity to get out and play with his big boy toys. He loved horsing around with the go carts and 4-wheelers, but he enjoyed just as much the times he got to take off and hit the open road on his bike. There was just something about riding his Gold Wing and Victory 8 that you couldn’t put into words. He also tried to do as much hunting and camping as he could get in.

Rick loved his friends and family, especially his grandchildren, more than they will ever know. He is survived by his step-mother, Elizabeth Ann Bailey-Sample; his two sons, Shawn Sample, Springfield, Mo.; and Dustin Sample, Sheridan; four daughters, Lauri, Jennifer, and Valerie, all of Tipton, and Amanda “Mandi” Ringer, Kempton; 12 grandchildren; three brothers, Sherman A. “Rusty” Sample (Carol), Sheridan; Charles R. Sample (Jeannine), Sheridan; and William “Bill” Dearing, Owego, N.Y.; one sister, Virginia “Jenni” Garrett (Mick), Avon; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews; and by his significant other and loving caregiver, Brenda Hunt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Joyce Elaine Burdine; and by his brother, Forrest Lee Sample.

A Celebration of Rick’s Life is being planned for early spring out at the family farm.

Kercheval Funeral Home in Sheridan has been entrusted with the arrangements.
