The City of Fishers has taken a major step forward in encouraging the arts and artists with the formation of the Fishers Arts & Culture Commission. The City Council approved the creation of this group and Mayor Scott Fadness appointed its seven members.
Tuesday night, the commission got down to work.
This session was more orientation than anything else, with city staff members explaining how they will support the commission in its work.
Tony Bagato, Director of Planning and Zoning for the city, explained how the commission will be involved in the art work featured in new construction of commercial developments, such as the Flexware building now under construction next to the library and the large development under construction near Interstate 69 and 116th Street, The Yard.
Commission members had a number of questions and listened carefully to the staff briefings.
The commission will vote on a president and vice president at its first official meeting set for March 12.
This commission begins a new era of arts and cultural activism in Fishers. With the downtown Nickel Plate District designated by the state as an Indiana cultural district, there is much to do.
