Carmel Clay Schools needs drivers. Not just any drivers, but bus drivers.

The district has 180 bus drivers this school year. It needs 10 more drivers to fulfill routes. It may seem like enough, but the district is adamant it needs 10 more to shuffle 500 middle school students around.

“It does surprise me. I would think driving a bus is decent pay, it does not surprise me. It is such a shortage,” said Carmel parent Terri Powell.

Superintendent Michael Beresford has a solution to the shortage. It includes picking up middle school students 10 minutes earlier and dropping them off 10 minutes later.

The district has added incentives to attract bus drivers, which includes training.

Powell said, “Earlier in the morning is not a big deal. I know after school a lot of kids have sports they have to get to; that may be a problem for many parents.”
