University girls drop first game of the season at New Castle

The University girls basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season Thursday night, dropping a 47-38 decision at New Castle.
The Class 1A No. 3 Trailblazers managed only two points in the fourth quarter to see their season opening win streak stopped at 11.
Jhordan McGuire had 10 points and Lindsey Syrek nine to lead University. Indiana All-Star candidate Cameron Tabor led New Castle with 26. The Davidson recruit scored the last eight points of the game, including a perfect six for six at the line in the last 65 seconds.
University trailed 24-22 at halftime, but scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take a five point lead. Jenna Blakley hit a three ten seconds in to the half off a feed from Maddi Sears. Blakley grabbed an offensive rebound and found McGuire for a lay-in and a 27-24 lead. Lucy Snyder scored off a Blakley pass at University led 29-24.
The Trailblazers led 36-31 late in the third quarter before Tabor scored to make it 36-33 after three quarters. After McGuire put University up 38-35 with 6:10 remaining on a nifty post move, the Trailblazers would not score again.
The Trailblazers are next in action Thursday Dec. 27 at the Monrovia tournament. University open with Traders Point Christian at 2 p.m. and will then play either South Putnam or the host Bulldogs.
New Castle improves to 7-7 with the win.
