The Hamilton Southeastern swim teams competed in the Homestead Invitational on Saturday.
The Royals boys placed third, scoring 421.5 points. Southeastern had three runner-up finishes: DJ Rogers placed second in the 50 freestyle, then swam on the two Royals runner-up relays, the medley with Blake Ratliff, Connor Harrison and Andrew Christopher and the 200 free relay with Christopher, Zack Bostock and Marcus Eden.
“For the swimmers, this was a really tough meet – bringing home third place equals last year, but there are still a lot of questions about how the championship lineup will shake out for our team,” said HSE coach Andy Pedersen. “This meet is an absolute slugfest with many of the best swimmers in the state competing for their schools. Most of the older and more experienced swimmers handled this very well while some of the younger guys got caught looking around and letting the meet pass them by. What a great opportunity for our team – there is no better way to prepare for the championships than by facing state level competition.”
In the girls meet, the Royals took fourth with 388 points. Southeastern placed second in four events. Individual second places were earned by Hannah Pugh in the butterfly, Molly Pedersen in the 100 free and Abby Harter in the backstroke. The three HSE swimmers teamed with Molly Robinson to take second in the medley relay.
“From a team perspective, this was a rough day for the Lady Royals swimmers – finishing fourth in this meet does not meet the historical standard for our program,” said Andy Pedersen. “All three teams finishing ahead of us are top 10 teams in the state, but we still wanted to be stronger today.””That does not mean there weren’t some outstanding performances and the enthusiasm was strong for the Lady Royals – fortunately this outcome makes our challenge moving forward very evident.
“There is no red flag here – the behavior of this team is solid and the character of these young ladies in incredible. We just got a real wake-up call from a perspective of what will be required to finish the season according to the team goals that they have set. The good news is that this group has some experienced leaders who have been down this road before – we will follow their lead and be back on track before the holiday break.”
