Royals upset No. 20 Zionsville

The Hamilton Southeastern wrestling team upset No. 20 Zionsville 41-26 in a Wednesday dual meet at the Royals’ gym.
Southeastern was back to full strength for the first time this season with all 14 varsity starters in the lineup. The Royals got the night started right with a first period fall at 113 pounds from No. 11 ranked junior Jake Simone. The Eagles won the next four matches in a row, but Southeastern turned the tide back its way by getting a big win from junior Reece Luhmann at 145 before his classmates, Jackson Williams and Ronan Hiner got big falls at 152 and 160 respectively.
Zionsville won back to back matches to regain the lead 26-21, but the Royals won the meet’s final four matches for the team victory. Senior Luke Ferren made his varsity debut with a first-period fall, then junior Andrew Irick, ranked No. 6 at 220 pounds, dominated his way to a first period fall as well.
Senior Crae Kunkleman dominated the 285-pound match before junior Sam Crousore scored a technical fall at 106 pounds.
The win marks the Royals’ first victory over a ranked opponent in three seasons and brings their season record to 1-1. Southeastern is back in action Saturday at the Frankfort Super 6.
