Taking action with Fishers Kiwanis

The Fishers-Geist Aktion Club (pronounced “action”) is a group started by Kiwanis to engage people 18 and older in the community with developmental disabilities. Now is the perfect time to get involved.

This newly-formed group is looking for members and will meet for the first time from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Opportunities for Positive Growth, Inc. (OPG) office, 10080 E. 121st St., Suite 112, Fishers.

OPG Behavior Support Specialist Dana Pottschmidt is a community liaison for Aktion. She became involved in October, just a couple months after the group was formed. She explained that her role is to facilitate the group, which is member-run. She provides some direction and support for the developmentally disabled members as they run the organization themselves.

“In the first couple meetings I will work with the group on putting together a social media page so we can get the word out about when and where meetings are going to be,” Pottschmidt said. “Because we are community-based they are going to occur at various locations depending on the service project that we might be doing or the educational component that we might be engaging in.”

The first official meeting for Fishers-Geist Aktion Club will be a casual event with the goal of getting to know one another and giving new members an idea of what future project they can participate in.

“The first meeting is a pizza social to meet and greet everybody,” Pottschmidt said. “We should also be taking nomination for officers that evening. The following meetings will have an officer-board moving forward and they will be leading things.”

If you want more information or want to get involved either as a member or as peer to help with projects, you can contact Pottschmidt by email at dpottschmidt@opgrowth.com or call (317) 478-1522.
