The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for the position of Reserve Deputy Sheriff. The Reserve Division is a group of unpaid volunteers empowered to assist full-time Sheriff’s Office staff with upholding the law and preserving peace. The Sheriff’s Office seeks qualified individuals who meet the high standards required to become part of one of the finest law enforcement agencies in Indiana and who are committed to serving the residents of Hamilton County. Reserves come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences as they enter a volunteer career in the field of law enforcement.
Road Qualified Reserves perform patrol duties similar to Merit Deputies in addition to special details such as court services, charity events, festivals, inmate security, and other assignments. These Reserves are expected to work a minimum of 24 hours each month, mostly supplementing the Patrol Division, in addition to regular training.
Reserve deputies must attend a Reserve Academy sponsored by the Sheriff’s Office with tentative plans to begin an academy in early 2018. The academy usually meets on evenings and weekends at the Sheriff’s Office in Noblesville. Road Qualified Reserves then complete a field training experience under the guidance of merit personnel. All Reserves must meet the same annual training standards as full-time deputies after completing their initial training.
Minimum qualifications for Reserve Deputies are:
- US Citizen or US citizenship by time of appointment
- Valid Driver’s License with no more than six (6) active points
- No felony convictions or domestic violence convictions
- Legal ability to possess a firearm
- High School or equivalency diploma
- Ability to read and write English
- No Operating While Intoxicated convictions in last five (5) years
- No dishonorable or undesirable discharge from military
- No illegal drug use in last three (3) years
- Pass all portions of the selection process, including a background check, physical fitness assessment, medical, psychological, and drug screening, and multiple written and practical exams during the Reserve Academy
- Reside in Hamilton County or one of the adjacent counties
- Must be at least 21 years of age (no upper age limit)
While becoming a Reserve Deputy is a large commitment, the benefits of serving the residents of Hamilton County more than make up for the time and effort.
