Guerin Catholic and Carmel advanced to a semi-final showdown after winning their first-round games Tuesday at Class 3A Sectional 10, which is being hosted by the Golden Eagles.
No. 19-ranked Guerin won the night’s first game, cruising past Pike 7-0. Katie Koger scored the Golden Eagles’ first goal just four minutes into the game. Ava Schlichte and Alyssa Ferry each added goals for GC, then Emersen Jennings and Blake Kimmel scored in the later stages of the first half, giving the Golden Eagles a 5-0 halftime lead.
Koger and Anna Schultheis each scored second-half goals to get Guerin Catholic to the final margin. Bailey Cappella and the Golden Eagles’ defense recorded the shutout. Guerin is now 5-7-2 for the season.
Next up, the No. 4-ranked Greyhounds took care of Brebeuf Jesuit 3-0. Kelsie James scored two goals in the first half: The first score was in the third minute off a cross in front of the goal box, with Morgan Parker and Elyse Reed teaming up for a double assist. James then scored in the 14th minute off a short pass by Ashley Witucki.
Witucki would score in the second half on a cross from the left flank. Cassidy Eckstein and Naomi Mann made the double assist. Erin Baker had four goalkeeper saves.
“This is the time of the season, starting the IHSAA ‘One and Done’ state tournament, that tests the mental toughness of teams,” said Carmel coach Frank Dixon. “I happy to say we passed our first test with a big win over Brebeuf Jesuit. The girls started the game on fire with a goal at the 2:56 mark after just missing a great chance a minute earlier. We then had a 30 minute weather delay at the 10:30 mark which we followed with a goal at 13:39. Since we have only allowed four goals this year, we then played with the confidence of a team that believes it will win.”
The Greyhounds are 14-1-2 for the season.
