Carmel began Metropolitan Conference play on Friday with a loss to Center Grove 17-7 at the Trojans’ field.
The Trojans scored in each of the first three quarters, with a 53-yard touchdown run getting them on the board midway through the first. An early field goal in the second period made the score 10-0, then a two-yard run early in the third added to Center Grove’s lead.
Class 6A No. 3 Carmel finally got on the board midway through the fourth, when Christian Williams caught a 14-yard pass from Tyler Trent. Spencer Hanna kicked the extra point. Trent finished the game completing 11 of 20 passes, for a total of 80 yards. Williams had eight catches.
Dylan Downing again led Carmel’s ground game, carrying the ball 14 times for 108 yards.
The loss was the first for the Greyhounds after they won their first two games. The ‘Hounds return to Carmel Stadium next Friday for their next MIC game, hosting Pike. The Red Devils are 1-2 after dropping their conference opener to 6A No. 5 Ben Davis 40-19.
